Partner visas: the evidence that actually counts

It's not won with one document — it's won by covering four areas with everyday proof.

A partner visa isn't won with a single document. It's won by painting a clear, consistent picture that your relationship is genuine and continuing. The Department looks at four areas — and the applications that succeed are the ones that cover all four with everyday proof, not just a statutory declaration.

Financial. Shared money tells a story: joint accounts, shared bills and rent, big purchases made together, one partner supporting the other. You don't need to merge every dollar, but you should be able to show your finances are intertwined.

Household. How you run daily life together: living at the same address, how you split chores, mail and bills in both names at the same place.

Social. That the world knows you're a couple: photos over time, trips together, invitations addressed to both of you, and statements from friends and family who can confirm the relationship.

Commitment. The depth and future of the relationship: how you met, the time you've spent, how you handle time apart, and your plans together.

The most common mistakes are thin evidence from the early days (start saving messages, photos and receipts now), unexplained gaps, and statements that read as generic. Whether you apply onshore (subclasses 820/801) or offshore (309/100), the evidence is what carries the case.

Start collecting early, organise by the four areas above, and get advice before you lodge — a refusal costs time, money, and sometimes the relationship's plans.
