DIY or use a registered migration agent? How to decide

Plenty of visas can be lodged yourself. Here's an honest look at when professional help is worth it — and when it isn't.

Not every visa needs a professional. Some are straightforward, well-documented, and perfectly possible to lodge yourself. So when is it actually worth getting help? Here is an honest view.

When DIY is reasonable

If your situation is simple — a clear-cut eligibility, complete documents, no complicating history, and a visa with good online guidance — you may be fine doing it yourself. There is no shame in that, and we will tell you if we think that's your situation.

When professional help earns its keep

Help pays off when there is complexity or risk: a relationship or business case that turns on evidence, any prior refusal or visa cancellation, character or health issues, tight deadlines, or a pathway decision where the wrong stream now costs you years later. In these cases a mistake is far more expensive than advice.

What a registered migration agent actually is

A registered migration agent is regulated by the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) and bound by a code of conduct. Registration means accountability — you are dealing with someone who is qualified, insured and answerable for the advice they give.

Beware unregistered advice

Be cautious of unregistered 'agents', overseas operators, or anyone promising guaranteed outcomes. No one can guarantee a visa, and acting on poor advice can lead to refusals that are hard to undo. Always check that the person advising you is registered.

How we work

We are happy to tell you honestly whether your matter is a DIY job or one where help is worth it. If it is straightforward, we will say so. If it is not, we will set out exactly what is involved before you commit. Either way you leave knowing where you stand.
